The film opens with footage of Pascal Légitimus wandering in Place Edouard VII in Paris' 9th arrondissement and begins a review of the Légitimus family history with anecdotes about the actor/comedian/director/producer.
It then plunges into the past to explore the story of Hégésippe Légitimus, the patriarch of the iconic family whose legacy serves as a bridge between the French Antilles and France.

Journalist, co-founder of Guadeloupe's socialist political party, mayor of Pointe-à-Pitre in Guadeloupe, and assemblyman representing the island in France's parliament, Hégésippe was referred to as the "Jaures Noir." He and his wife, Clémence Birman, had a son named Etienne, who followed in Hégésippe's footsteps and became a journalist.
Etienne was a co-founder of the anti-racist organizations MRAP (Movement contre le racisme et pour l'amitié entre les peuples) and LICRA (la Ligue internationale contre le racisme et l'antisémitisme). He was a staunch defender and supporter of Antillean culture in France and spearheaded the transfer of the remains of Félix Eboué and Victor Schoelcher to the Pantheon.
Etienne was the life partner of Marie Berthilde Paruta, an actress, singer, and dancer from Guadeloupe who became known as Darling Légitimus. Darling became famous in her own right, starring in Euzhan Palcy's film Les Cases-Nègres (Sugar Cane Alley) and winning the Volpi Cup for Best Actress award at the Venise Film Festival in 1983. She was named a Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1998.
