Cast-iron door grills were popular in Paris from the 1830s through the 1850s. Here at the entrance door panel of an apartment building in the Les Halles district, two happy winged creatures - the dove, a symbol of love and peace, and the angel with its association of protection - impart a sense of harmony to all who pass through the door. The panel, with its detailed latticework pattern of leaves, fruit and flowers, provides secure protection for its glass backing, allowing for the passage of light, and creating a whimsical welcome to the building.

66, rue Greneta, 2nd arrondissement (Metro: Etienne Marcel)
