What’s On in Paris

Founded as an annual event in 1984 by the Ministry of Culture, Journées du Patrimoine (National Heritage Days) is held every third Saturday and Sunday in the month of September. On this weekend, many buildings and sites that are normally closed are open to the public. For a list (in French) of the 1,101 monuments and sites in Paris that will participate in this event follow this link: www.journeesdupatrimoine.culture.fr.

September in Paris is la rentrée scolaire:  it's all about the new school year. Sorbonne students coursing through the Guizot courtyard may look up to be inspired by the gilded angelic allegories of the sundial, one holding a compass to measure the dimensions of the earth, the other a tablet for notation. Created during the glorious days of the Sun King, Louis XIV, the figures reflect both the extravagance and the classicism of the times. High above them is a Latin inscription, Sicvt umbra dies nostri: Our days flee like a shadow.
